WHAT: 6th Annual Benefit Book Sale for Daniel McGowan
WHEN: 11am to 7pm, Sunday, September 18th, 2011 [rain date: TBA]
WHERE: Bedford Avenue at North 6th Street in Brooklyn
COST: There will be books priced for any budget

Friends and supporters,

We are writing to announce our 6th Annual Benefit Book Sale for Daniel McGowan. We've had great success and good times with these book sales in the past and this year will be no different.

Why a fundraiser now? While you may not realize it, life in prison can actually be really expensive. From making overpriced phone calls and e-mail access, to having to buy basic necessities from the commissary at prices many times that of retail, Daniel’s living costs have add up. For that reason, even if you can’t make it to the book sale, please consider r donating to Daniel today (http://tiny.cc/danieldonation). Without donations from friends and supporters, Daniel would be unable to buy the minimal goods that provide a small amount of comfort while he is imprisoned. Not to mention the staggering amount of money he still owes for the legal representation during his trial.

On Sunday, September 18th, Book Thug Nation and Family & Friends of Daniel McGowan will be having an all-day book sale to raise money for Daniel's legal defense and commissary fund. The sale will be held at the Book Thug Nation book tables on Bedford Avenue and North 6th Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn.  Along with great books at inexpensive prices, there will be music, a table with Daniel t-shirts, merchandise and literature and maybe even some free food!

To make the sale happen we NEED your book donations-- preferably ahead of time.  Please see the list of guidelines below for what to donate. The best way to donate is to bring your books to the Book Thug Nation storefront at 100 North 3rd Street (between Berry and Wythe Streets) from 12-9pm any day before the sale. Please be sure to tell whoever is working that the books are specifically for the Daniel McGowan Benefit Sale. You can also bring books to North 6th Street and Bedford Avenue the morning of September18th or contact krazdale@gmail.com to make specific arrangements for donating.

DONATION GUIDELINES

Tue, 26 Jul 2011 04:46:05 -0700 Phong Nguyen, Author of Memory Sickness and Other Stories Reading Thurs 7/28 7:30pm http://bookthugnation.com/phong-nguyen-author-of-memory-sickness-and-ot http://bookthugnation.com/phong-nguyen-author-of-memory-sickness-and-ot

A Reading by Phong Nguyen, author of Memory Sickness and Other Stories (Elixir Press)

About Phong Nguyen:

The son of a Vietnamese-American immigrant scholar and a daughter of the American revolution, Phong Nguyen grew up outside of Princeton, New Jersey, where he was a confirmed member of the under-achieving generation X. After attending college for a year, he dropped out to live on the beach and work at a series of crappy jobs. In a used bookstore in New Haven, he discovered Marcel Proust's THE REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST, and did not put it down for nearly a year. After finishing the book, Nguyen committed his life to writing, and proceeded to complete a Master's degree at Emerson College, where he studied with Dewitt Henry, and a PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied with George Makana Clark.

Phong Nguyen is now an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Central Missouri, where he teaches fiction-writing and edits the literary journal PLEIADES. Before editing for PLEIADES, he was chief editor of CREAM CITY REVIEW, and before that, an editorial assistant at THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY.

His own stories have appeared in AGNI, BOULEVARD, IOWA REVIEW, KENYON REVIEW ONLINE, MASSACHUSETTS REVIEW, NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, FLORIDA REVIEW, MISSISSIPPI REVIEW, MERIDIAN, NEW OHIO REVIEW, TEXAS REVIEW, PHOEBE, CHATTAHOOCHEE REVIEW, SOUTHERN INDIANA REVIEW, and dozens of other literary journals.  His stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

His first collection of stories, MEMORY SICKNESS AND OTHER STORIES, won the Elixir Press Fiction Award for 2010, and was published in June 1st of 2011. Don Lee, former editor of PLOUGHSHARES and author of YELLOW, has called MEMORY SICKNESS "a superb debut" full of stories that "pulse with poetry, power, and grit," adding, "This is a truly memorable collection." William Giraldi, editor of AGNI, and author of BUSY MONSTERS, said, "Phong Nguyen has crafted stories with zero at the bone, stories of how the child is father of the man, of what we do to one another in this world, and what we do to ourselves. ... This book will scar you." And Benjamin Percy, author of THE WILDING, called these "gritty, moving stories."

Mon, 11 Jul 2011 12:35:00 -0700 Prison Industrial Complex Puppet Show: Tues, 7/12, 7pm http://bookthugnation.com/upcoming-events-prison-industrial-complex-pup http://bookthugnation.com/upcoming-events-prison-industrial-complex-pup

Mrpa_roadshow

Join NYC ABC and Book Thug Nation as we welcome a traveling puppet show of a history of the Prison Industrial Complex from slavery to where it is today. There will also be some other road show elements and presentations as well as a few anti-capitalist fairy tales using rod puppets. The roadshow is a product of the Mysterious Rabbit Puppet Army, whose past work highlighted security culture in the midst of the feds and cops working to destroy our movements and communities.
The tour will raise awareness about the Prison Industrial Complex and the ways in which police and policing hurt our communities.

"Our goal in this tour is to use art to explore these relationships and brainstorm with our audiences how we can fight this brutally racist system," said Mysterious Puppeteer Michael Snacks.

The United States currently imprisons nearly 3 million people. About 6.5 million people are presently under some form of supervision within the criminal justice system. Racism continues to be a major factor in the United States, illustrated by policies and programs that sustain white supremacy. Racism, as it is used through criminal laws that target people of color, is essential to prisons, not accidental. The Prison Industrial Complex is also fueled by dramatic and racist reporting about "crime," "delinquency," and "rebellion," creating a culture of fear. As a result, people (primarily people of color, youth, and the poor) are locked in cages for longer and longer in the interests of "public safety." The way the many parts of the Prison Industrial Complex interact is exactly what makes it so powerful and destructive. In order to fight this system, we have to recognize what drives and shapes it.

These shows are child-friendly and we greatly encourage you to bring younger folks to this event. The focus is not sub-culture specific, in an attempt to make it more appealing to a larger number of folks.
